1989 lobbyist registration act- this law was passed in 1989 and recognized that lobby groups has to register with a government agency and submit certain information about what they were doing to influence government. The reason for lobbyists to register was that it was desirable that officials and the public knew who was attempting to influence the government and that paid lobbyists should not impede free and open access to the government. According to this act, a lobbyist is someone who, for payment, on behalf of any person or organization meets with a public office holder. This act was later revised in 1995 with the inclusion of additional requirements. Short form of 1989 lobbyist act- on 30 september 1989, following extensive consultations and considerable debate, the lobbyists registration act came into force in canada. The legislation sought to make transparent the activities of lobbyists without impeding access to government.
