Document Summary

Psychology comes from two greek words: psyche: soul, and logos: study of a subject: herman von helmholtz (student of muller) began the first experimental examination in psychology of human reaction time. He argued the psychology should be the scientific study of consciousness & the study should be modeled after fields of chem and physics. He mounted a campaign to make psychology an independent discipline rather than the child. He established the first lab in a university in germany (1879) as well as the first journal dedicated to publishing psychological research. Psychology became the study of conscious experience focused squarely on the mind but demanded that the methods used to study it to be as scientific as chem and physics. The first two major schools of thought emerge: structuralism and functionalism. Argued psychology should analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how these elements are related.
