Science of psychology organized into branches (structuralism and functionalism) Structuralism: early school of thought promoted by wundt and tichener; used introspection to reveal the structure of the human mind. Aimed to discover the structure of the mind. Functionalism: early school of thought promoted by james and influenced by darwin; explored how mental and behavioural processes function- how they enable the organism to adapt, survive and flourish. Explored memories, emotions and considered why we do such things. Claimed they were adaptive, passed down genetically. Mary whiton calkins = pioneering memory researcher and the first woman to be the president of the american psychological association. Pioneer psychologists defined psychology as the science of mental life (explored emotions, sensations, images and feelings)
