Stress: the process by which we perceive and respond to stressors (certain events) that we appraise as threatening. Stress has less to do with the actual event, and more with how we appraise it. When short- lived and perceived as challenges, stressors can have positive effects. Stress can mobilize immune system to fight infections and heal. Stress arouses and motivates us to conquer problems. 3. pressure: expectations or demands to behave in a certain way. Can come from yourself, parents, teacher and peers. 3 types of stressors: catastrophes: unpredictable large- scale negative events. People going through catastrophes tend to have higher stress and arousal: significant life changes: life transitions such as leaving home, someone"s death, getting divorced. Even happy events, like getting married, can be stressful. Most common in young adults- who have the highest stress levels. Recently divorced or fired people etc. are more susceptible to disease.
