The nature of prejudice: pervasiveness and perspective: prejudice: a negative attitude toward an individual based solely on that person"s presumed membership in a particular group. The most studied topic in social psych due to history. Intergroup anxiety theory (stephan & stephan): historical conflict between different groups makes members of both groups anxious in their encounters with each other. Social identity theory influence: our self-esteem derives from our group membership: the liking for the ingroup is fundamentally stronger than the dislike of the outgroup. Fein & spencer: non-jewish americans evaluate a (jewish/italian) woman"s resume and videotape after they"re given positive or negative self-esteem feedback: people who feel bad about themselves compensate through downward comparison by harsh judgment of outgroups. Scapegoating: people who feel inferior will blame an outgroup for their troubles. Given a false sense of control over their lives. Conforming (particularly young) to norms and values of one"s worldview can lead to prejudice.
