Charles darwin: theory with an emphasis on function and adaptation. Uniformitarianism: controversial theory, earth"s major features developed due to long gradual processes, took into account the hundreds of thousands of years it took for mountains to develop. Catastrophism: widely held belief in darwin"s time that earth"s features were the result of a few major cataclysms on earth"s surface, compatible with a literal interpretation of the bible, i. e. the flooding. James ussher: came to the conclusion that the earth was only 6000 years old, taken directly from evidence in the bible. William paley: argument from design, the eye of a mammal, for example, is so perfectly constructed that they must have been designed by an all-powerful creator.
