Sex/gender binary system: definition: a way of thinking and organizing that is based on the belief that there are only 2 normal biological sex categories. Sees the 2 sexes as opposite or as very different from each other: significance: limits room for expression of other genders, teaches society only 2. Having two different means that they shouldn"t be treated the same because their opposites. Act your gender or else you"re an outcast and not accepted by society. Rewarded for acting their gender and punished for straying from their gender: articles: fausto-sterling: the 5 sexes: excluded other sexes, corrective surgery to be categorized and if you didn"t do it, you would be punished. For example, women would be buried alive if they wanted to be men (europe middle ages). Cultures always maintain just the 2 and exclude the other 3. Male, female, merm, ferm. (from the 5 sexes) gould: parents are appalled by the refusal to pick a gender.
