Heart approx. size of a fist sits slightly left of the midline located in the mediastinum of the chest apex points left and rests on top of the diaphragm base located superiorly on the posterior side of the heart. 4 chambers- 2 superior atria and 2 inferior ventricles. Atria: have thin muscular walls serve as receiving chambers highly expandable separated by the interatrial septum muscles of atria called pectinate. Four veins opening to left atrium (2) left pulmonary veins: extend from left lung (2) right pulmonary veins: extend from right lung. Ventricles make up bulk of heart serves as pumps left ventricle strongest pump (thickest muscle) 2 ventricles separated by interventricular septum muscles in chambers called papillary muscles. Right ventricle forms the anterior surface of heart pumps deoxygenated blood 1st into the pulmonary trunk and then out to lungs for gas exchange.
