Western societies empathize the importance of romantic relationships. Single people recognize that others expect them to be in relationships. Most young adults expect that they will marry. 3 emotional responses to being single- ambivalence, empowerment, despair. Study 2- those with stronger fear are more dependent on less satisfying relationships. Fear of being single plays a unique role in the maintenance of dissatisfying relationships beyond insecurity related concepts like neuroticism, depression, and the need to belong.
