In 1979, overthrown by islamic fundamentalist coup: turning point for both superpowers, eventually shah is kicked out and goes into exile, catches superpowers by surprise blindsided by religiously motivated coup and don"t know how to handle it. Us embassy stormed and 53 hostages taken and held for 444 days: embarrassing for carter who couldn"t get them released.
