- The degree to which a work group or organization is heterogenous with respect to
personal and functional attributes
- The presence of differences among members of a social unit
Types of Diversity:
Surface Level
-generally immutable
-Almost immediately observable
-Measured In simple and valid way
-Eg: race, ethnicity, sex age
Deep Level
- Subject to more construal
- More mutable
- More challenging to measure
- Eg: attitudes, knowledge, values, skills morals, religion
Why Diversity Matters?

Stereotypes: are more or less shared socially defined categorization
-implicit personality theories about a group of people
Social Identity Theory: people often understand or individual identify and self worth based on
the groups they belong to
In-group/ out-group Bias: Individuals tend to view their in-group as diverse and nuanced,
members of our groups are viewed as more stereotypical
