Hysteria- Freud
Hypnoid States way of explaining onset of hysteria without talking about the trauma.
when we are born, we have this lack of connection with our psyche
- Most sensitive are women, especially when they are doing mindless
work like knitting
- Freud tries to argue that the’re phsiall degeerate.
Hypnoid states physiological degeneration
-Look for a precipitating event
it seems to act like an agent.
1. Failure to abreact- repression- Ch. 4 (268,269) resistance, defense.
How? Why does talking help? Why does remembering the first instance of the hysteria
help? The first instance, the onset?
We are stuck with so much excess energy Traua
So how do we abreact? Must bring the event into the human world.
a. First comes revenge- screaming, crying
b. Second, we talk about it- rebuilt the associations that seem to wear away with
the contact of daily life.
i. Isolation of one traumatic event from the rest of your life. Bring it back
into your life in order to move on.
c. Third, we remember the event.
i. Remember the feeling and put it into words.
-“oeties he eperieig the eet, ou do’t feel athig. “o reeerig
then feeling allows you to be a full human being. We have to feel and know ourselves.
REASON + EMOTION
Why would failure to abreact make us ill?
Pg. 5, Line 4
Ex. A sick baby- part of her wants to be quiet and another part of her wants to be alive (mother)
-Irritation and fatigue from taking care of sick child
-There is aialee aout the hild’s life.
-We repress cases of SHAME and HUMILIATION and irremediable loss, death.
Man with brother
Ambivalence- hate but love his brother
*** Aialee is ke to Freud’s aout of orals, alues, life, loig ad hatig i eer
single intimate relationship). Not that we hate as much as we love but we always have both.

There is this Human tendency to refute those initial reactions that are fundamental of human
nature. shame, repression, illness.
In fact, illness is cause by the failure to abreact, when we fail to abreact we become ill. But it
o’t keep us from repressing the next shameful event.
Active Phase Passive Phase (clean us)
The event of shame and force that has brought it on)
need to express the shame but in a healthy way. The doctor needs to know it.
“oiet’s sese of oralit eeds to be altered.
“o hat’s the ure? Rerite “oiet’s oral odes- something concrete. Need someone to
understand and not judge the opinions of others.
*Critiquing a Christian Culture (script- adit our sis ad that ou’re a sier ulture = e
pure, do’t adit i realit.
Shame causes problems we repress thus failure to abreact.
SO WHAT IS THE CURE? Change vision of what human nature is. Think what you want but
control your actions about feeling shame about your thoughts.
Psychoanalysis
1. Lie on the couch
2. Pressure on the forehead because Freud was bad at hypnotizing
3. Hold head like a newborn infant (hold head in hand)
Regression- use of authorit. No ou do reeer, ou ill reeer.
4. Description- tell people what an analyst is like. Different ways information is analyzed
and organized.
a. Chronology of events
b. Themes
Trig to ssteize ralig
1. Chronological order within a theme.
2. Ordering of themes.
Both take an incredible amount of time.
3. Another connection, the Issue
Try to weave all of this together but falls in different order. What makes it clear?
Ohhhhh…. People sa it ad soeties the alas just sa it.
It is easier for an outsider to see. Hidden story or logic, sometimes Freud was able to
fid it ad soeties he as’t ale to fid it.
