Document Summary

In the empirical article, pi and his colleagues assessed the social behavior that accompanied feelings of awe, speci cally by means of the small self . Given the important role that awe plays in many collective processes, the researchers hypothesized that people respond to awe by diminishing their individual selves and concerns, thereby exhibiting prosocial behavior as a result. Participants were placed in a variety of situations across a number of studies in order to verify whether feelings of awe result in perceiving a presence greater than oneself and an inclination to treat others well. In study 1, participants reported their dispositional tendencies to exhibit feelings of awe and were randomly assigned to play a version of the dictator game . In study 2, 3, 4, and 5, feelings of awe were experimentally induced in participants, who were then assessed with regards to their positive or negative emotions, feelings of self-diminishment, and exhibition of pro-social behavior.
