Document Summary

Define the characteristics of consciousness and describe how it it measured. Consciousness is subjective, private, dynamic, self-reflective, and central to sense of self. It is measured in self reports, physiological measures, and behavioral measures. Describe the various levels of conscious, preconscious, and unconscious. The conscious mind includes everything that we are aware of. While we are not consciously aware of this information at any given time, we can retrieve it and pull it into our consciousness when needed (ex: phone number). The unconscious is a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories (usually unacceptable or unpleasant) that influence our behavior and experience even though we are unaware of them. Differentiate patterns of brain waves associated with stages of slow wave and rem sleep. Stage 2: sleep deepens, sleep spindles (1-2 second bursts of rapid brain activity). Stage 3: sleep deepens, regular appearance of delta waves. Stage 4: sleep deepens, delta waves dominate the pattern.
