Ego and id derive from a common matrix. Conflict free - ego and id are derived from the same place. Id exists at birth, ego takes about 6 months to develop. Ego develops separately from the id - separate sources of energy. Primary autonomy (apparatus) - phylogenic: stuff we are born with. Secondary autonomy (apparatus) - rationaliser, adaptation to the environment and coping demands from your surroundings. Primary autonomy = primary apparatus = ego apparatuses of primary autonomy = phylogenic (biological) Secondary autonomy = secondary apparatuses = rationalizer (adapt to environment) Can move from primary secondary autonomy when there is mental equilibrium & conflict free functioning. Equilibrium: between id, ego and superego (needs are met, not overmet) Freud believed the id, ego and superego were in constant conflict. Argues that the ego must have its own source of energy from there to be a true theory of conflict.
