Document Summary

The most fascinating concept about speaking is how much thought actually goes into it. Daily, people speak an abundance of words without even realizing all of the innate structuring and processing that actually goes into language. Though, the most bewildering thought is that this process has been going on since the beginning of time. Although our vocabulary has evolved, the way that humans produce sound has and will continue to remain the same for the rest of our existence. The study of systems involving sound from all languages is actually called phonetics (winkler, 2012, p. 83). More specifically, winkler (2012) mentions that articulatory phonetics is the study of how sounds are produced by humans (p. 83). After reading this chapter, it is safe to realize that without knowledge of phonetics, teaching english as a second language would be nearly impossible when breaking down language barriers due to lack of knowledge on basic language-use and communication.
