SCAN 3203 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Kvasir, Huginn And Muninn, Sleipnir
Document Summary
*notes for this class will be up soon. For now, here is a general study guide to help with the first midterm. Most norse mythology comes from the viking age (793-1066). We have very few sources to draw on norse mythology : some archaeology (i. e. combs, burial sites), place names, written sources. Two main written sources : poetic edda (1270 a. d. ), snorri"s edda (1179-1241 a. d. ). Formed form the codex regius, which was given to the danish king in 1662. Made up of anonymous, poetic material from pre christian scandinavia. Readings include: voluspa (the seeress"s prophecy), grimnismal (grimnir"s sayings), vafthrudnismal (vafthrudnir"s sayings), hyndluljod (the song of hyndla), harbardarslijod (harbard"s song). Written by 13th century icelandic skald (poet), snorri sturluson. Snorri was a christian (this is important to remember). Snorri"s edda is composed of three parts: gylfaginning, skaldskaparmal, hattatal. Snorri"s edda presents a prose version of mythology in contrast to the poetic edda.
