Document Summary

*this guide will cover the recitation readings and questions (if the instructor/ta provided questions for the week, i will use those as a guide. Otherwise, i will just use what was discussed in recitation) from the first midterm. John lindow: thor"s hamarr : how is thor"s hammer both a weapon and a tool, the hammer can both be utilized as a weapon and a tool. Mjolnir is the only divine weapon to also be utilized as a tool: symbolic of thor"s connecting to humans. Norse culture utilized the hammer much like thor did since materials were scarce. Therefore; people often smithed tools that could also be utilized as weapons (such as the hammer): evidence of thor"s hammer in archaeology. Mjolnir supposedly can destroy anything: mjolnir also creates though. For example, thor uses mjolnir to bring the goats he slays and eats every night back to life: mjolnir also represents smithing.
