Current trends include: regulation of the health care industry, managed care, restructuring of health care organizations, technology, social and ethical factors. There is not one overall regulatory body for health care. As concern for heath care costs have increased there have been more attempts to control costs while ensuring the quality of care. Access to health care is a related concern. Managed care is the regulation of the provision of certain health care services through limits on what services will be paid for and circumstances under which these services may be accessed. A gatekeeper is utilized in managed care to control access to medical specialists and various other services. Ordinarily, one"s primary care physician serves as the gatekeeper.
