PSYC 3334 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Susan Fiske
Document Summary
Susan fiske identified five core social motives: belonging, understanding, control, self- enhancement, and trust. The need to belong is the most basic need; it is an individual"s strong desire for stable relationships (baumeister and leary, 1995). It is the only subjective factor connected to objective well-being. The need to understand is a cognitive motive and is the need for a shared understanding of the world. The need for control is another cognitive motive and is our need to have perceived association between our behavior and an outcome. When we are adolescents, most of the conflicts we have with our parents are over our need for control. The need for self-enhancement is to see oneself as worthy or capable of improvement. Conflict can arise when the need for self-enhancement presents us with differing information. The need for trust is the need to see the world as a good and benevolent place. You should be able to provide empirical evidence.
