Document Summary

In federalist 10, james madison discusses what has come to be known as pluralism. Madison"s view is that the design of american government will ensure that a wide variety of interest will be represented, and that small groups of citizens will not have a disproportionate influence on public policy. First, explain the logic by which madison arrives at the conclusion. This discussion should draw on the course material on interest groups and public opinion (e. g. , the burns, schattschneider, and cassidy readings). Factions today, can be argued to have taken the form of special interest groups, which are organization that pursue the interests of its members or of a certain cause. The problem is that lobbying campaigns, that interest groups partake in, only are successful less than half the time because there is only a correspondence between public opinion and public policy 60% of the time.
