e. The laws and the narratives of the Torah are full of references to animal sacrifices. How was
this animal-sacrifice tradition adopted and adapted in Judaism and Christianity?
Thesis: Animal sacrifices was the standard for the atonement of sins before destruction of
temple. However, after the destruction of the temple in 70CE, prayer, Torah study and charity
have replaced sacrifice in Judaism, while Christ’s sacrifice on the cross replaces the biblical
sacrifices in Christianity.
1. Judaism
a. Before destruction of temple:
a.i. Animals are killed for the atonement of Sins, purification of defilement.
a.ii. Animal sacrifices come into different types (Leviticus 1-7, 12 – 16):
a.ii.1. Public – tamid (continual), Sabbath and festivals
a.ii.1.a. The public sacrifice occurs when the people of
Israel pay for a goat (or other animal) through communal
funds and hand it over to the priests who privately do the
sacrifice in the Temple.
a.ii.2. Private – pilgrimage, Passover. Obligatory.
a.iii. It should be noted that some texts hated sacrifices such as Isaiah 1,
Hosea 6:6, and Jeremiah 7 while others like Ezekiel praised sacrifice.
a.iii.1. Isaiah states that God wants you to wash your hands and
be clean, not to kill.
a.iii.2. Hosea states that God wants love not sacrifice
b. After destruction of temple:
b.i. Jews were no longer able to sacrifice animals at the temple.
b.ii. Prayer, charity, Torah study are just as good or even better than animal
sacrifices for atonement for Jews.
b.ii.1. Mark 12:33 supports this idea because it says that “to love
him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all
your strength” is more important than all burnt offerings and
sacrifices.
b.iii. Rabbis find atonement of their sins through repentance.
b.iii.1. B Yoma is a Jewish rabbinic book that goes into great
detail to explain the significance of repentance in atonement of
sins.
b.iv. There is also a total change in religious system after the destruction of
temple:
Rabbis replace priests
Synagogues replace the temples
Good deeds replace the sacrifices
b.v. However, it must be noted that, Jews still live in expectation that the
temple will be rebuilt, an animal sacrifices will be restored.
