The second temple was destroyed in 70 ce and the new period, rabbinic period, starts. This creates a revolt and chaos because jews don"t have a temple and a sacred place to perform their religious practices. Therefore, scholars, rabbis, define a new way of reaching enlightenment and god: the devotion to the mishnah and torah and its interpretation because that becomes the new path to god.
