Document Summary
Many of our set theory problems can be solved by drawing a picture called a venn diagram. The venn allows us to visualize the set in question. We can use venn diagrams to visualize: union, intersection, complements, relative complement. To draw a venn diagram, we first draw a box to represent the universal set. Next, we draw a circle for every set in our problem. The union of two sets (a u b) refers to all of the elements that are in a or b. Note: this an inclusive or which refers to all elements that are in set a, or set b, or in both sets a and b. So, when drawing a venn, the union represents everything inside of the circles. Let"s look at the union by drawing a venn. The intersection of two sets (a b) refers to all of the elements that sets a and b have in common.
