BIBL 105 Final: ot study guide pt 8
Document Summary
What"s special about proverbs: the book of proverbs states general principles rather than promises. These principles are applicable to all people everywhere, not just to believers. The proverbs are not promises given by god. They describe what will usually happen when a person makes a right choice, not what god guarantees will happen: the book of proverbs is about choices. The writers are not trying to give information, but to guide decisions. The writers are concerned that we do the right thing, and avoid the harmful consequences of bad decisions: fear of the lord is critical to understanding proverbs. The book of proverbs clearly states that the fear of the lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline (proverbs 1:7). Fear of the lord is not terror but a reverential acknowledgment of his power and his presence. Only a firm belief in god will keep human beings on the wise moral pathway described in proverbs.
