Lecture 5: mapping in archaeology: purpose of a transit in archaeology, to make a topographic map of a site, to set out places to excavate. Sampling in survey and excavation: complete survey or excavation-no sampling, partial survey of excavation-sampling. Sampling universe: define the area to be surveyed or excavated. Selective hunch sampling: transects as rays from known site, using your own judgment or intuition. Sample is not representative of the entire sampling universe. Stratified random: transects good for distributional data. Post-molds where posts had rotted: wall of house/village, horizontal: ice cube tray technique. Lecture 8: chronology: relative dating, chronometric (absolute) dating. Super imposition: older things are deeper in the ground. Stratigraphy: layers (strata) in the soil: mixing of deposits: cultural, burial dug through floor, fire pit dug into earlier deposit, mixing of deposits: natural, animals burrow, tree root, artifact styles, thompson and worsae. Poodle-skirts : mini-skirts, hoola-hoops, skate boards, fish net stockings .
