Document Summary

Mayr"s biological species concept: a species is a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring. Habitat: species live in a different habitats, no chance together. Temporal: species mate at different times of the year, no chance. Behavioral: one species mating behavior doesn"t match with another. Mechanical: parts do not fit together (homosexual people) Gamete: successful population but gamete cannot form sperm receptor proteins don"t allow for fertilization. First generation of hybrids is fertile, but backcrosses or future offspring are not. The good: gives us a mechanism to how speciation occurs, reproductive isolation. The bad: can"t be used for fossils, can"t be used for asexual organisms, not useful for some hybrid systems, overplays the importance of gene flow and downplays the importance of natural selection. Allopatric: different place, solid physical barrier between population. Possible outcomes: reinforcement, strengthing old reproductive barriers. Disturbance zones can cause hybrid zones to occur.
