Heracles means glory of hera in hopes that hera would be merciful (because she didn"t like zeus" illegitimate children. Zeus came in disguised as zeus" husband and slept with her. When heracles was about to be born, zeus bragged that a son of his was about to be born & would be a hero. Hera found out about this, and sent the goddess of childbirth to alcmena"s porch and held her knees to her chest. While she did this, alcmena could not give birth (sympathetic magic). To allow heracles to be born, alcmena"s maid runs out and shouts that alcmena had given birth. The goddess knew that this was impossible, but was so shocked at this statement that she stood up in surprise. At that exact moment, heracles popped out. hera turned the maid into a weasel. When heracles was an infant, hera tried to kill him with snakes. He was raised by his mother, alcmena, and his stepdad.
