Subject- main topic, what the poem is about . Lyric poem- a short poem expressing the thoughts and feelings of a single speaker. Narrative- main purpose is to tell a story (ex. the iliad) Elegy- a lament or a sadly meditative poem, often written on the occasion of a death or other solemn theme. Irony- a manner of speaking that implies a discrepancy; saying one thing, implying another. Dramatic irony- refers to a situation in a play wherein a character whose knowledge is limited says, does, or encounters something of greater significance than he or she knows. It is the difference between knowledge of the speaker and the reader. Dramatic monologue- a poem written or a speech made by a character of some decisive moment. It is addressed to another character that remains silent. Punish someone who ends up being that person. Tone- conveys an attitude toward the person addressed.
