Document Summary

The colonial government forced indian settlements to embrace english laws and customs. The tribal leader of the wampanoag"s, metacomet, resented the english efforts to convert indians to christianity. With the arrival of john eliot, missionaries began an aggressive campaign to convert the indians. Indians were resettled in praying towns, and had to abandon their native cultural practices and spiritual beliefs. John sassamon, a graduate of harvard and a "praying indian", warned the english of metacomet"s preparations for war. He was found dead, horribly beaten under the ice of a frozen pond. The colonial authorities convicted and hung three wampanoags for. This led enraged wampanoags to attack and burn puritan farms on. The war that resulted caused both sides to suffer incredible losses. The fighting caused more destruction in new england relative to the population than any. This war caused the colonial inhabitants of america to draft all males of age to join the militia.
