Metacomet was the leader of the wampanoags and was known as king phillip to the colonist. He resented the efforts made by the colonist to convert the indians to christianity. John elliot began an aggressive campaign to convert the indians to christianity during the mid seventeenth century. In 1764, john sassamon, warned the english that metacomet and the wampanoags were preparing for war. A few months later he was found dead and colonial authorities convicted three wampanoags of murder and they were hung. Puritan farms, followed by an englishmen shooting and indian which brought about another series of retaliations.
