America at the end of the first world war. Most americans were embittered by the war experience. There was a turn inward for american foreign policy. We turned a blind eye to the rest of the world. Because of the nature of the decade, there was more time for the consumption and enjoyment of the good things of life. There were higher wages, which allowed for this. During the war years, employment was at a high rate. Everything was functioning very smoothly as far as employment. 1919 however, us didn"t do a very good job planning the post war environment. There was an abrupt transition from 1919 to: there was no longer a demand for high-level production. Wilson never gave a good transition for peacetime economy. Everything dropped because there were no more war provisions needed. ] It takes time for an industry to gear up and wind down after a war. There were layoffs because factories were getting shut down.
