There are 5 main types of blood vessels: Si: matthew landry mland84@lsu. edu: carries blood from tissues towards the heart: vein, carries blood away from the heart to tissues: artery, a small vein that collects blood from capillaries and delivers it to a vein. Blood passes from the heart and then in sequence through arteries arterioles. Capillaries venules veins, where blood drains back into the heart. Blood vessels tunics: both arteries and veins have three layers called tunics. The tunics surround the lumen, which is the open space through which blood flows. Internal = well-defined: external = very thin, both of these form the inner and outer boundaries of the muscular tunica media. Exchange of oxygen and co2; nutrients, gases, and wastes are exchanged between the blood and interstitial fluid: consists of only 2 layers, endothelium, basement membrane. Capillaries: smallest of the blood vessels and form the u-turns that connect the arterial outflow to the venous return.
