Family as a social institution: interdependence between different institutions (ex. money+family) Social institution- something that takes care of basic needs religion, education, etc. Family meets multiple basic needs such as survival (children and elderly need family), psychological (stability/affection), and biologically (offspring) A group of kin united by blood, marriage, adoption, who share a common residence for some part of their lives, assumes reciprocal rights and obligations with regard to one another. Native americans have very different concept of family, live apart much more. Household can be made up by 1 person if you live alone! You can live in a different household than your family. Nuclear family (immediate) vs. extended family nuclear family can be just a single mom and her child. Extended family household- multiple generations living together 25% minorities live in extended households, but only 10% whites do. Asians invite husband"s parents to live with them (upward extended- elderly moving into the household).
