Social differentiation- how people vary according to social characteristics. Lenski historical view: said that human society developed after 5 different types of society. Hunter/gathering: consist of about 50 people, who live on what they can find to eat. Horticultural: people farm using a digging stick as their basic tool, may have a surplus every now and then, occasionally fight wars to protect their land. Metallurgy(intro to iron) resulted in plows and stronger weapons. Made inequality skyrocket b/c not everyone had land or animals. Caused people to have surplus value: more surplus more power. U. s. and western european countries during 20th century, greatest division of labor and most wealth.
