Document Summary
Primary groups- relatively small group that engages in intimate face-to-face interaction over an extended period. Secondary groups- large, usually formal, impersonal and temporary collection of people who pursue a specific goal or activity. Reference groups- people who shape our behavior, values, and attitudes. Not groups: crowds: large numbers of strangers who come together for the same purpose. (sports events, aggregates: large numbers of strangers who come to the same place for different purposes. Social catagories: large numbers of people who are thought to share the same characteristics (men, women, teenagers, baby boomers, ethnic groups) Exchange theory and the norm of reciprocity when we get something from someone else, it creates an obligation to give something back. Ingroups: groups we belong to, or associate ourselves with ("our" sports teams) Outgroups: groups we don"t belong to, especially those we are opposed to. We attribute desirable behavior by ourselves and our ingroups to internal causes, and undesirable behavior to external causes.
