Founders: comte, positivism, applying scientific method to society, try to help society, spencer, survival of the fittest, societies evolve- barbarian to civilized, believed most intelligent would survive while others would die, let things happen on their own. Northern american sociology: du bois, co founder of naacp, studied black/white race relations, embraced marxism, addams, co founder of naacp and aclu, campaigned for 8 hour work days and anti-child labor work laws. Differ from european sociologists: more interested in form, took action, more specific to american issues (race) Basic sociology: gain knowledge, make people aware, spencer. Public sociology: pass laws, influence passing of laws. Applied sociology: apply changes, du bois and addams. Major theories: importance of theory, fact- never interpret themselves, theory- how 2 or more facts relate.
