Document Summary

How frequently and the severity of lying, gets you labelled a liar. Relativity: norms are relative, what is appropriate for one group, they may not be appropriate for another group. If norms are relative, so is deviance: example: homicide is different than murder. Murder is intent without legal justification which is determined by the law: this is relative. Some states allow you to kill someone that broke into your house, even if they are running away from you, other states will put you in prison for this. Sanctions: consequences for your actions: formal sanctions are determined by society, informal sanctions. Norms: social rules that govern our behavior; they tell us what and what not to do. In turn, this tells us what we should expect from other people and what they should expect from us: folkways: hold the door open for people, shake hands with people, etiquette. How to behave in an elevator example: mores: much more serious than folkways.
