So how do we get people to follow these rules or social norms: sanctions (positive and negative aka rewards and punishments and these can be formal or informal) Spanking, frowning, shunning, gossip: formal negative ex. This establishes whether it is formal or informal. Deviance-violation of a social norm that elicits a negative reaction: that negative reaction has two effects-1. The audience effected has to think it"s deviant. Interview parents, examine the households, much more etc: we will use qualitative data, which is rich in context.
