Violence vs. criminal violence: main difference is law, what constitutes criminal violence, consensus model, ex: laws against homicide, conflict model, ex: the dominant group writes the laws, constructionist model. Obstacles to valid and reliable data: some forms are rare, not easy to observe b/c of setting, many go unreported, may be normalized for some groups, offenders have motive to conceal violence. What exactly is collected: return a- crimes known to police (offense data, age, sex, race, and ethnicity or arrestees (arrest data, supplementary homicide reports. Determinants of calling the police include: extent of personal injury, value and insurance, nature of victim/offender relationship, confidence in the police. Involvement in illegal activities: hierarchy rule- the most serious crime is included in ucr. If police are not able to determine whether a crime occurred, they consider it unfounded.
