Human physical and mental maturation takes a long time. Infants are helpless, unable to survive on their own: need to be nurtured and must learn how to survive in a social and physical environment. If men define situations as real, then they are real in their consequences. Just because one of these steps has taken place, it doesn"t guarantee that the other steps will take place as well. What does it mean to be a friend: strong evidence we"ve created the ability to think of ourselves as an object.
