Genre: when a particular combination of dramatic structure and conventions repeat, a system of classification for drama, ex: romantic comedy, science fiction, tragedy, etc, a system of repetition and difference: the basic structure repeats but the elements change. Artistic function of genre: genre unconsciously instructs us as spectators as to the way something is intended to be interpreted, ex: context for conventions- scream rules for horror movies. Tragicomedy: boarder of tragic and comic, ex: american beauty, anything by wes anderson, a melancholy element. Satire: holds up human vices and foibles to scorn, ex: fight club, idiocracy, dear white people. Tragedy: main character is brought to ruin, usually a nobel that is brought low, usually through flaw, moral weakness or lack of ability to cope, ex: hamlet, medea. Drama: serious but not tragic, character undergo sorrow but are not completely ruined by it, characters don"t change status, sometimes used as an umbrella term, ex: american theatre post 1920s, tennessee williams.
