Persistent + severe mood changes that occur following childbirth. Disturbances in appetite, sleep, low self esteem, difficulty maintaining concentration. Remits generally first 3 months after childbirth but some cases persist for years. Depression becomes a fixture of individuals life, becomes viewed as part of their personality. Characterized by mood swings between states of extreme elation and severe depression. Unrealistically heightened euphoria, extreme restlessness, excessive activity, disorganized behaviour, impaired judgment. Chronic pattern of mood swings between depression and mania. Not sufficient in severity to be classified as bipolar disorder. Recurrent, severe and persistent anger or temper outbursts. At least 12 months, evident in 2 settings. Mania and hypomania not present, not part of odd or cd. Repeatedly in final week before menses, remits in post menses week. Higher depression level at entry point of treatment.
