Sensorimotor stage= age from 0 to 2 in which infants develop mental representations, object permanence, and intentional, goal directed movements that come about as a result of circular reactions. Means for adapting first schemes: object permanence. Objects continue to exist even if the infant does not see them. However, infant still commit a-not-b error, in which they fail to recognize when an object has been moved: mental representations of objects. Develop an understanding of images and concepts, which allows infants to engage in make believe play and imitation. Infants start to develop more sustained attention as their attention to novel, new ideas starts to decline. Also start to engage in more joint attention with their caregiver, which results in greater sustained attention. Memory: shift from implicit memory to more explicit memory. Infants are able to easily engage in recognition, but as they get older, they start to gain an understanding of concepts and ideas, leading to more engagement in recall.
