Stalin started purging the countries of latvia, lithuania and serbia. Agreements in tehran (1943), yalta (1945) and potsdam (1945: stalin, attlee and truman) Also needed help on the western front. Us and britain intervene in 1944 (much later) Could use poland to invade other countries. Two countries have a long and complicated relationship-> tension. Expansion of soviet union and rise as a superpower. Increased nationalism and independence movements in asia and russia. Renewed effort to secure lasting peace through international organization- united nations.
