Conducted an experiment on the effects of oil on the surface of water by adding a small amount of oil to the water in a small pond in clapham. Observed a thin film over the surface of the water. They thought that the membrane was impermeable to almost. Proposed that the acid molecules form a monolayer by orienting themselves vertically with the hydrocarbon chains away from the water and the carboxyl groups in contact with the surface of the water. Demonstrated that lipid molecules could form a bilayer. Concluded that rbc are covered by a layer of fatty substances that is two molecules thick. First accepted membrane model by majority of scientists. Basically a sandwich of lipids arranged in a bilayer: inadequate in explaining later research. Found that the portion of the protein that spans the lipid bilayer is hydrophobic in nature and arranged in a three dimensional shape, often as an alpha helix.
