Therapeutics: branch of medicine concerned with prevention of disease and treatment of suffering. Pharmacotherapy: application of drugs for purpose of disease prevention and treatment of suffering. Drug: chemical agent capable of producing biologic responses within the body. Medication: after a drug is administered it is considered a medication. Biologics: agents naturally produced in animal cells by microorganisms or by the body itself: e. g. hormones monoclonal antibodies, natural blood products, vaccines. Complementary/alternative medicine theories (cam): natural plant extracts, herbs, vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements. Boxed warnings: regulated drugs w/ special problems. Black label warnings: located in package inserts, primary alerts for identifying extreme advers drug reactions discovered during and after the review process. Ensure patient, family, or legal guardian have information necessary to make informed decisions. Answer questions within of scope of nursing practice. Written order from a person with legal authority. Potential for self-harm if disease is allowed to progress.
