Document Summary

Spring 2010, module 4 (11:30 am to 2:40 pm, rawls 2058) The service sector of the u. s. economy employs about 80% of the labor force and is responsible for approximately 75% of the gross domestic product. There is service component to most manufactured products, for example warranties, handling customer complaints, etc. Given the important role services play in the american and world economies, it is important for a manager to understand how processes in services differ from processes in manufacturing. Using the service sector of the economy as our setting, we will develop a high-level conceptual model for business process design and improvement (or, more succinctly, a conceptual model for operations consulting). Conceptual model is a system (or process) for thinking critically, particularly for the purpose of defining or analyzing a business process to understand how it provides value to customer or to ascertain how it can be improved.
