Topographic map- shows the distribution of elevations in an area and most often represents this distribution by contours, lines that connect points of equal elevation. The more closely spaced the contour lines, the steeper the slope. The formation of parallel layers of sediment as particles settle to the bottom of the sea, a river, or a land surface. Strike- direction of line formed by a horizontal plane and a bedding plane. Dip- acute angle between a bedding plane and the horizontal, measured perpendicular to strike. Strain- any change in the original size or shape of an object in response to stress acting on the object. Compression- a force that squeezes together or shortens a rock. Tension- a force that stretches a body and tends to pull it apart. Shear- a force that pushes two sides of a body in opposite directions. Deformed body that returns to original size and shape when stress is removed.
