Document Summary

Unit 1: what is sound, how is it created, and how does it travel, sound is basically vibration. It must have 3 things: energy, vibrating element, and a resonating chamber. So first, sound is sent by energy through a medium, which could be air, and that travels in waves. We need to talk about the physics involved in creating timbre: timbre describes the quality of sound produced by different instruments. Timbre is important to humans because it allows us to recognize the voice of the speaker. Timbre provides different pitches to the listener, allowing for variance in music. Pitch is seen as a function of vibration, so lower pitches are harder for humans to catch. Size of the vibration body is critical to creating different pitches: what is "voice range?" How are the names for them applied in practical use: voice ranges refer to how high or low a voice sounds. Examples would be soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.
